                       Homework Policy

Each night the children will be asked to perform a simple task for homework.  We believe that this activity will re-enforce concepts taught in class and help the children to develop a sense of responsibilty.  All homework will be sent home in the homework folder and should be completed and returned to school the next day unless otherwise noted.  Each child has a homework calendar taped inside his or her folder.  When the children return their completed homework assignment a star will be placed on the calendar in the appropriate box.  At the end of the month a homework reward will be given to each child who has accumulated the correct number of stars.  In addition to daily homework assignments, the students will also be given a special Math Homelinks Calendar each month.  The calendar is designed to engage the students in quick and simple activites that support the math goals for that month.  As you complete each of the daily activities please initial the box.  Completed Math Homelink Calendars are due back to school on the first school day of each new month.

Lunch and Snack Money

A lunch menu will be sent home at the beginning of every month.  The menu selection sheet will be sent home each week.  By checking the box next to your choices on the "Weekly Selection Sheet"  you insure that your child recieves the lunch you feel is most appropriate for her or him.  You may purshase lunch on a daily or weekly basis.  Please put all lunch money and snack money in an envelope or zip-loc bag with your child's name on it.  All selection sheets and money should be placed in your child's folder.

Homework Folder

In the beginning of the year your child is given a special homework folder.  The children must bring this folder to school every day.  It is our way of communicating with each other.  These folders are checked every morning.  All important notices from the school office or from me will be placed in this folder as well as your child's daily work and homework assignments.  You will also use this folder to send me  notes, return completed homework assignments and send in any money the children might need.  Please remember that all money should be sent to school in an envelope or zip-loc bag clearly marked with your child's name and the purpose for which the money has been sent to school.  Please remember to use the folder for all communication and money.  We do not check the students' backpacks.

Spring Will Bring...

 New Science Themes

"Weather"

We spent time learning about the rain and the water cycle.  The children used props and role played to show how the sun warms the water and causes tiny droplets  to rise into the air and form clouds in the sky.  When the clouds get full and heavy the water falls back down to the earth as rain and the cycle begins all over again.

Next, we focused on air and wind.  We learned through experimentation that air is everywhere and wind is moving air.  The children engaged in activities that used wind to move various toys.  We listened to the sounds that wind makes as it moves slowly and then as it moves quickly through objects.  We enjoyed reading "The Wind Blew" and then as a follow up activity we made our own version of the story.

"Living Things"

Our Spring science theme will be “Alive”.  We will focus on what is alive and how living things are different from each other.  The class will investigate animals and plants and how they grow.  We will decide what all living things need to stay alive.  The students will engage in activities that require planting seeds and observing and measuring their growth.  The children will begin learning about life cycles by observing tadpoles in our nature center as they grow and change into frogs.  The children will create a time line to record their observations at the various stages of the tadpoles’ growth.  Later in the Spring, we will observe metamorphosis as we watch our caterpillars grow and change into butterflies from the larvae stage to the actual butterfly stage.  These life cycle projects are always fascinating and exciting for the children.  We are looking forward to a fun time in science class this  Spring!
